SMMC member Karen Slote presented a report on the history of artificial turf, identified some of its health and environmental issues, and described Newton’s artificial turf project. The videos also show crumb rubber pellets spilled onto the parking area near uncovered storm drains. The videos, taken over a four-day period, show piles of rolled-up turf stacked in the parking area near a children’s swing set. Ward 3 Councilor Julia Malakie and environmental health advocate Ellie Goldberg have been documenting the removal process at Newton South in a series of videos ( Video 1, Video 2, and Video 3) and created a website, This is Not Recycling. Led by Better Action Now, residents have been objecting to Newton’s plans to replace the three artificial turf fields at the high schools and to install a new turf field at Albemarle Field. Residents have been urging the City Council (see petition), Conservation Commission, and other City Commissions to acknowledge the public health, safety, and environmental risks of both artificial turf and the disposal/recycling process. The more than 10-year-old fields are being replaced with new artificial turf as part of the Synthetic Turf Replacement Projects. In 2012, Newton was named the 4th best small city to live in America by Money Magazine.This week, concerns have been raised about spillage of crumb rubber infill and other debris from the removal of artificial turf at Newton South High School. Downtown Boston is only 10 miles from the school and accessible by public transportation. COMMUNITY INFORMATION Newton, is a unique suburb of Boston with a system of villages. US News and World Report ranked Newton South as the 29th best school in Massachusetts, and rated it "A ". In 2018, 16 students were 2018 National AP Scholars. AWARDS AND ACCOMPLISHMENTS Newton South was ranked the #6 best public school in Massachusetts by Boston Magazine, taking into account class sizes, test scores, and AP participation. The Newton South Recreation Complex offers a gym, an indoor track, a fitness room, a wrestling/dance room, a wellness classroom, and locker rooms. FACILITIES The Newton South campus features vocational technology education equipment and a culinary arts facility. Over 50% of students maintain a GPA of 4.0 or higher. The schools offers 5 foreign languages and 20 AP courses. Students have access to programs such as STEAM and career and vocational technical education. A top high school in the state, Newton South High School's rigorous academics are reflected in their exceptional average SAT scores of 1325 and 97% college acceptance rate. ![]()
